Nike sales skyrocket after Venezuelan president captured in tracksuit
The detention of Nicolás Maduro and the publication of his photo online have sparked widespread user interest, with particular attention drawn to the Venezuelan leader’s outfit, as sales of “Maduro-style” tracksuits surged, according to The Economic Times.
On January 3, US President Donald Trump posted a photo showing the detained Maduro aboard an aircraft, wearing a grey Nike tracksuit. The image quickly spread online, and the look of the captured president unexpectedly appealed to shoppers, driving Google searches for the Nike Tech Fleece tracksuit—the same outfit Maduro was wearing.
Users also began reporting stock shortages due to the spike in demand, especially for size 3XL, which Maduro reportedly wears. According to the outlet, the gray two-piece set remains available on Nike’s official website, priced at $260—$140 for the jacket and $120 for the pants.
Reports of explosions in Caracas on January 3 preceded Trump’s announcement that the United States had launched large-scale strikes and that Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro had been captured and removed from the country with his wife. Trump later published the photo of the detained Maduro.
