“Not a forever war” – JD Vance sets tone on Iran military campaign “We’re going to take care of business and come home”
US Vice President JD Vance reassured Americans on May 19 that President Donald Trump’s conflict with Iran will not turn into a “forever war,” using a White House briefing to defend the administration’s stance as speculation grows over his potential successor, Reuters reports.
Acting in for press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who is currently on maternity leave, Vance answered journalists’ questions for nearly an hour in a largely composed tone, contrasting with Trump’s more confrontational approach.
He emphasised that any escalation with Tehran in the absence of a diplomatic breakthrough would ultimately align with long-term US security interests.
"This is not a forever war," Vance said. "We're going to take care of business and come home."
Earlier, Vance stated that Washington had already made significant progress in negotiations with Iran toward reaching a potential agreement. However, he noted that the resumption of a military campaign still remains possible.
Previously, US President Donald Trump said that the United States could resume strikes on Iran as early as Friday, May 22, or in the following days.
