Official: Armenia in talks with Russia over railway restoration

13 February 2026 16:12

The Armenian government is negotiating with Russian partners on the restoration of railway sections in Yeraskh and Akhurik, officials said.

David Khudatyan, Armenia’s Minister of Territorial Administration and Infrastructure, told journalists that discussions with Russia have reached a stage of “mutual understanding” regarding the two railway stretches, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

He indicated that a formal agreement could be announced in the coming days.

Khudatyan said Armenia would consider Russian involvement if it proves more efficient, but the government is prepared to undertake the reconstruction itself if any obstacles arise.

“These sections are a key element in the logic of lifting the blockade and the direction in which we are moving,” he said.

Asked about potential Russian investment in the project, the minister responded positively, noting that negotiations are ongoing.

“If it proceeds under the first scenario I mentioned, then yes. Based on our working sessions, we are close to reaching an agreement. But since this involves both sides, I will not jump ahead – the announcement will come when the time is right,” Khudatyan said.

He added that his deputy, Armen Simonyan, is coordinating with Russian counterparts on the transport sector as part of the discussions.
