Official: Armenia ready for peace treaty

12 July 2024 17:30

Deputy Speaker of the Armenian National Assembly Ruben Rubinyan has stated that Armenia does not have any territorial claims beyond its internationally recognized borders and is prepared to proceed with border delimitation discussions with Azerbaijan and to sign a peace treaty promptly.

Rubinyan made these remarks during the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum, Caliber.Az reports citing the Russian media.

"A 12-kilometer segment of the Armenian-Azerbaijani border has been successfully demarcated, with both nations' border services deployed to these areas. Armenia does not seek any territory beyond its internationally recognized borders and is prepared to engage in constructive and intensive efforts to advance the delimitation process and finalize a peace treaty promptly," Rubinyan remarked.

He further highlighted Armenia's readiness and enthusiasm to integrate into international transit networks by revitalizing regional routes. He believes that major infrastructure projects in the South Caucasus could act as a unifying force for the regional countries and potentially beyond.

The Armenia-Azerbaijan border has long been a contentious issue, marked by conflict and territorial disputes. The most recent phase of tension stems from the Karabakh conflict, which has involved multiple flare-ups of violence between the two countries.

The efforts to delimit the Armenia-Azerbaijan border and finalize a peace treaty are crucial steps in addressing long-standing disputes and fostering regional stability. The successful completion of these processes has the potential to significantly impact the South Caucasus region's geopolitical landscape.
