Oligarch Karapetyan questions Armenia’s possible CSTO exit

22 May 2026 16:59

Russian-Armenian businessman and “Strong Armenia” bloc leader Samvel Karapetyan has criticised Armenia’s leadership over its approach to continued membership in the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), arguing that the bloc and its leading member Russia remain important partners for Armenia.

“Let’s say we leave the CSTO—what is the alternative?” Karapetyan said at a press conference,  Caliber.Azreports via Armenian media.

He said that decisions influenced by emotions could be dangerous, adding that the core issue lies not in the organisation itself but in the Armenian authorities’ failure to fully use its potential.

Karapetyan also noted that Armenian authorities have been criticizing the CSTO’s effectiveness for several years but have not taken formal steps to withdraw from the bloc.

His remarks come amid ongoing debate in Armenia over its security alliances and foreign policy direction.

In September 2024, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan announced the suspension of Armenia’s participation in the CSTO, citing dissatisfaction with the organisation’s collective security mechanisms.

Later, Armenian Foreign Minister Ararat Mirzoyan said Yerevan was assessing risks related to a potential withdrawal from the alliance.

In December, Pashinyan stated that relations with the CSTO had “passed the point of no return,” reflecting deepening uncertainty over Armenia’s future role in the Russia-led security bloc.
