One killed, three injured after Turkish cargo ship attacked in Black Sea

23 July 2026 14:39

A Turkish cargo ship carrying coal from Russia's Port of Taman to the Turkish port of Trabzon came under a drone attack in the Black Sea, leaving one crew member dead and three others injured.

The bulk carrier MV Reyhan Sarı later arrived safely at the Turkish port, Caliber.Az reports, citing Turkish media.

The attack caused damage to the vessel and killed 54-year-old Turkish crew member Savaş Çakar, who was working in the engine room.

Two other crew members were injured and airlifted by a Turkish Coast Guard helicopter to a hospital in Samsun for treatment.

The ship was met at Trabzon Port by its agent, Uğur Şahintürk, owner of Poyraz Shipping.

Authorities have launched an operation to recover Çakar's body, which remains trapped beneath twisted metal inside the vessel. Once recovered, it will be transferred to the Forensic Medicine Institute for an autopsy.

The vessel is expected to unload its coal cargo in Trabzon before departing the port after the completion of the necessary procedures.
