The call took place against the backdrop of heightened international scrutiny of Iran’s human rights record. On January 23, the UN Human Rights Council adopted by an overwhelming majority a resolution condemning what it described as unprecedented and violent repression by Iranian security forces in response to nationwide protests.
The resolution cited the deaths of thousands of protesters, mass arrests, widespread internet shutdowns, and serious human rights violations since demonstrations erupted in late December.
