Pakistan, Iran FMs discuss regional tensions on SCO sidelines

Pakistan's Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister, Senator Mohammad has Ishaq Dar, met with Iranian Foreign Minister Seyyed Abbas Araghchi on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Council of Foreign Ministers meeting in Cholpon-Ata, Kyrgyzstan, to discuss bilateral ties and the regional security situation.

During the meeting, the two ministers reaffirmed the longstanding relationship between Pakistan and Iran while reviewing recent developments across the region, Caliber.Az reports, citing the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Pakistan.

Dar voiced deep concern over rising regional tensions, stressing the importance of dialogue, restraint, de-escalation by all parties, and sustained diplomatic engagement to promote lasting peace and stability. He also highlighted the need to build on the understandings reached under the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding signed in June 2026.

Araghchi expressed appreciation for Pakistan's continued diplomatic support and its efforts to advance regional peace and security. He also thanked Islamabad for facilitating the safe return of Iranian fishermen and crew members, including those aboard vessels intercepted by the United States, as well as for coordinating with Iranian, U.S. and other relevant authorities to ensure their safe transit through Pakistan and return to Iran.

The two sides agreed to continue close coordination and regular consultations on matters of mutual interest, reaffirming their commitment to working together to promote regional peace, stability and shared prosperity.
