Pashinyan opens up on choice that unlocked Armenia-Azerbaijan peace talks

17 September 2026 11:18

The successful conclusion of negotiations on a peace agreement between Armenia and Azerbaijan came after Yerevan chose, at a decisive moment, to move away from the principle of mechanical reciprocity, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said.

Speaking at the Comprehensive Security & Resilience international conference, Pashinyan elaborated on the circumstances that led Armenia to make this decision, Caliber.Az reports per Armenian media.

“We found ourselves in a situation where there was no longer any possibility of improving the text of the peace agreement through the method of ‘ping-pong.’ And we faced a choice: continue this ‘ping-pong’ of reciprocity or pursue a different logic. We decided that we agreed with this text.

We must build relations with our neighbours in such a way that mutual stability and economic prosperity are mutually beneficial,” the PM noted.
