Pashinyan says Armenia recognises it can not be member of both EU, EAEU Updated

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said Armenia's current relationship with the European Union (EU) does not conflict with its obligations as a member of the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU).

Speaking to reporters, Pashinyan said there are currently no legal, economic or political commitments between Armenia and the EU that are incompatible with the country's obligations under the Russia-led EAEU, Caliber.Az reports via Armenian media.

“In the current relationship between Armenia and the EU, there are no legal, economic, or political obligations that would conflict with Yerevan’s obligations under the EAEU,” Pashinyan said.

He also addressed a recent statement issued by four EAEU member states regarding the possibility of Armenia holding a referendum on joining the European Union.

“The Republic of Armenia has taken note of the statement by the four EAEU countries regarding the holding of a referendum on EU accession,” he said.

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has said Armenia recognises that simultaneous membership in the European Union (EU) and the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) is not possible, while stressing that the country is not yet ready to join the EU.

Speaking at a meeting of the EAEU Intergovernmental Council, Pashinyan said strengthening cooperation with fellow EAEU member states remains a key priority for Armenia's foreign and economic policy, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

“For Armenia, strengthening cooperation with the other EAEU members remains a foreign policy and economic priority. This approach will also be reflected in the new government’s program,” he said.

Pashinyan added that Armenians do not currently face a choice between the two blocs because the country has not reached the stage of EU membership.
