Peru cuts diplomatic ties with Iran amid Middle East escalation

Peru has severed diplomatic relations with Iran, citing Tehran’s role in escalating conflicts in the Middle East and disrupting maritime traffic through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, the Peruvian Foreign Ministry said on September 1.

The government said the decision was consistent with Peru’s longstanding commitment to peace and followed growing concerns over restrictions on international maritime transit and the impact on global trade, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

“Peru views with deep concern the severe restrictions imposed by the Iranian regime, as well as the disruption of international trade through the Strait of Hormuz,” the ministry said.

Peru also accused Iran of obstructing the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), alleging that Tehran has at times denied inspectors access to nuclear facilities and hindered verification efforts aimed at preventing the development of nuclear weapons.

Despite the diplomatic rupture, Lima said consular relations would remain in place to protect the interests and nationals of both countries in accordance with the relevant Vienna conventions.

The decision comes amid a sharp escalation in the conflict in the Middle East, with the United States carrying out new airstrikes on Iran and Tehran responding with retaliatory attacks. The fighting has also contributed to higher global energy prices.

Peru’s move follows a decision by neighboring Chile to close its embassy in Tehran, although Santiago stopped short of severing diplomatic relations, citing economic and security considerations.
