PM: Hungary's EU leadership opens door to Ukraine peace negotiations
Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán has described the "open door" for peace negotiations in Ukraine as the most significant achievement of Hungary's presidency of the European Union.
He argued that instead of prolonging the conflict, EU nations should focus on strengthening Europe's defensive capabilities and establishing a new security framework with neighbouring countries, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
"Six months ago, no one wanted to talk about peace. Today, everyone is discussing it. We have opened the door to meaningful negotiations. This is the greatest result of Hungary's EU presidency," Orbán stated.
Note that, earlier in December, Orbán warned of the risk of the conflict escalating and stressed the importance of joint efforts to prevent irreversible decisions by global leaders. He emphasized that achieving peace requires a swift ceasefire.
The Prime Minister noted that both the Vatican and Hungary have advocated for peace since the outbreak of the conflict in Ukraine, adding that the opportunity to secure it now exists.
Previously, Hungary’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs clarified the significance of talks between Orbán and Putin.
Furthermore, the Prime Minister highlighted that, in the run-up to Christmas, many European leaders continue to support the intensification of military actions in Ukraine, which he described as dangerous.
At the end of November, Orbán stated that 2025 would be a fantastic year if the Russian-Ukrainian conflict were resolved.
Previously, Orbán's office commented on the possibility of his visit to Moscow for the 80th anniversary of Victory Day.
