PM Kobakhidze: Georgia aims to reset US ties with bold strategic overhaul

20 March 2025 12:52

Georgian Prime Minister Irakli Kobakhidze revealed the country's intention to "start over" in its strategic cooperation with the United States.

Kobakhidze stressed the importance of the recent meeting between Georgia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Maka Botchorishvili, and US Ambassador Robin Dunnigan as a significant step toward this goal, Caliber.Az reports per Georgian media.

“One of our top foreign policy goals is to start over with our strategic cooperation with the United States. In this regard, of course, the meeting between our Minister of Foreign Affairs [Maka Botchorishvili] and Madam Ambassador [Robin Dunnigan] is significant,” Kobakhidze said.

The Prime Minister also clarified that while it is not customary to disclose the details of closed-door discussions, both sides expressed strong interest in resetting relations between Georgia and the US on a “substantial and qualitative” level.

“We have already made multiple public remarks expressing our intention to fully reset relations, to begin a strategic collaboration from scratch, and to do so with a precise roadmap reflecting concrete objectives,” he added.

Kobakhidze outlined a clear vision for future cooperation, suggesting that both nations would need to come together to establish specific objectives that would reflect shared priorities.

“Let’s outline concrete objectives together that will reflect priorities important for both countries. This is how we want to restore Georgia’s strategic cooperation with the United States. I believe there is value alignment,” he said.

He further noted that this ambition aligns with broader international discussions. “Remember what we’ve been talking about for the last three years, and now the new US government is saying the same thing on almost every issue. There is agreement amongst views; this is a public truth that everyone recognises. The rest, I believe, will be determined by the actions of both parties. We are completely ready,” Kobakhidze declared.

The Prime Minister went on to explain that the meeting with the US Ambassador had been initiated by the Minister of Foreign Affairs and occurred soon after.

“Regarding Georgian-American relations, there is alignment, the main thing is that concrete steps are taken. This will largely depend on how the deep state in the US is ultimately defeated,” Kobakhidze added.
