PM Pashinyan hails Washington peace deal as foundation for “new Armenia”

21 September 2025 11:03

Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan has described the peace achieved during a trilateral meeting in Washington as the foundation for a “new Armenia,” in a statement on Facebook marking the country’s Independence Day.

“With the peace established on August 8, 2025, this dream has once again filled the Republic of Armenia, and our duty is first to cherish it, and then to bring it to reality,” Pashinyan said, Caliber.Az reports.

The prime minister emphasised the historical significance of the peace and the proclamation of a new era—the Fourth Republic.

“An independent, sovereign, democratic, peaceful, secure, developed, free, and happy Armenia awaits our care, like a newborn,” he wrote.

The trilateral meeting on August 8, 2025, at the White House between U.S. President Donald Trump, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev, and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan marked a pivotal moment in resolving the decades-long Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan.

This summit, billed by Trump as a "Historic Peace Summit," resulted in the signing of a Joint Declaration and several bilateral memoranda of understanding (MOUs), laying the groundwork for normalisation of relations, regional connectivity, and economic cooperation in the South Caucasus. The event was the culmination of months of U.S.-mediated talks, building on prior negotiations under the Biden administration but finalised under Trump, who positioned it as a personal diplomatic triumph.
