PM Pashinyan rules out holding snap parliamentary elections in Armenia

26 January 2025 09:10

The Armenian government has no plans to hold early parliamentary elections, Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan stated in an interview with the Public Television.

"There are no plans for early elections. Discussions about the possibility of early elections have always existed," he said, Caliber.Az reports.

Pashinyan also mentioned that his party intends to organise a forum to draft a party candidate list ahead of the next regular elections. "Party members will vote for individual candidates, and as a result, our electoral list will be formed," he added.

For the record, the next parliamentary elections in Armenia are scheduled for June 2026.

The premier also addressed the issue of preserving the Armenian diaspora, saying: "A person of Armenian origin who does not speak Armenian does not read in Armenian, and does not live by Armenian traditions—this is emigration. At a certain moment, even if they retain their surname, they no longer associate themselves with the Armenian nation."

He emphasised that Armenia is currently witnessing unprecedented levels of emigration and identified the only solution for saving the diaspora: perceiving the Republic of Armenia as their homeland.
