Poland calls for more NATO troops on Russia border
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk proposed to consider increasing the presence of European troops on the border with Russia.
“I will also talk about the need to increase the presence of European and NATO troops on the borders with Russia and Belarus,” Tusk said before the EU summit in Brussels, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
In June 2024, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, and Estonia called for the European Union to establish a defense line along the bloc's border with Russia and Belarus. This proposal aims to enhance protection against potential military threats and hybrid activities from Moscow.
Befor that, to strengthen its defensive posture, Poland has increased troop numbers along the eastern border. In May 2024, the Polish Ministry of Defense announced the "East Shield" program, detailing plans to bolster defenses along the Belarusian and Russian borders. The initiative includes increasing the number of troops guarding Poland's eastern border from 6,000 to 8,000, with an additional 9,000 troops on standby to mobilize within 48 hours if necessary.
