Poland seeks emergency UN meeting after Russian drone incursion
Poland has called for an emergency session of the United Nations Security Council following a major breach of its airspace by Russian drones, which Warsaw and its neighbours describe as a deliberate and coordinated provocation.
Foreign Minister Radosław Sikorski told local radio that Poland intends to use the UN meeting to “draw the world’s attention to this unprecedented Russian drone attack on a member of the UN, EU and NATO,” The Guardian reports.
He added that Polish authorities have “no doubt the act was deliberate.” “Nineteen violations of our airspace, several dozen drones identified, a few shot down, the action lasting seven hours, the whole night – so we cannot say it was an accident,” Sikorski stated.
Poland, along with Ukraine and Lithuania, issued a joint statement labeling the event a “deliberate and coordinated attack” and an “unprecedented provocation.”
By contrast, NATO’s Supreme Allied Commander Europe, Alexus Grynkewich, expressed uncertainty regarding whether the breach was intentional. He called for technical debriefs and cautioned that early reports—especially on drone numbers—should be treated with caution.
Prime Minister Donald Tusk described the incursions, which included multiple drones penetrating Polish territory, as bringing Poland “closer to military conflict than at any time since World War II.” He stressed that those drones posing a direct threat had been shot down.
Poland also formally requested consultations under Article 4 of the NATO treaty, which allows member states to invoke discussions when they believe their security, territory, or political independence is threatened.
Dutch F‑35 jets stationed in Poland joined in intercepting the intruding drones, in coordination with Polish air defence forces.
Russia has rejected accusations that the violation was targeted, and a Kremlin spokesman said its military was open to consultation if needed.
Meanwhile, first public responses from the US, including from President Donald Trump, were seen by some as ambiguous.
