Polish army to receive additional Piorun MANPADS
Polish Minister of National Defence Mariusz Blaszczak has approved an addendum to the contract for the supply of local Piorun MANPADS for the Polish army.
Piorun is a Polish-made man-portable anti-aircraft missile system designed to destroy low-flying aircraft, aircraft, helicopters, and unmanned aerial vehicles. The set is a deep modernisation of the PPZR Grom set, therefore the second designation of the missile is Grom-M, according to Poland’s Defence 24.
“According to the addendum, 3,500 more anti-aircraft missiles and 600 Piorun launchers are to be supplied, the first of which will be supplied to the Polish armed forces at the end of this year,” the message said.
The initial contract in 2016 envisaged the supply of 1,300 missiles and 420 Piorun launchers, some of which have been transferred to Ukraine this year.
