POLITICO: EU officials feel relief after meeting with Trump at G7
Diplomats and officials of the European Union felt a sense of relief after a meeting with US President Donald Trump at the G7 summit, POLITICO reports, citing European officials and diplomats.
According to two sources cited by the publication, after the first full day of talks at the summit, they unexpectedly took a more optimistic view of their relations with the White House and became slightly less concerned that the crucial NATO summit in Türkiye next month could go off track.
“The discussions we’ve had among ourselves and with the U.S. president — both in official meetings and in informal encounters on the sidelines — give me a certain sense of optimism,” German Chancellor Friedrich Merz told journalists.
Although European diplomats cautioned against excessive optimism, noting that Trump has previously shifted his positions after pro-Ukraine statements, they also broadly agreed with the German leader’s assessment.
