Powerful 8.7 quake off Russia’s Kamchatka sparks tsunami alerts across Pacific

30 July 2025 09:37

On July 29, a powerful earthquake with an estimated magnitude of up to 8.7 struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula early, prompting tsunami warnings across the North Pacific, including the Kuril Islands, Japan, Hawaii, and parts of Alaska.

The epicentre was located around 150 kilometres southeast of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and approximately 360 kilometres northeast of Severo-Kurilsk, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.

According to Russia’s Geophysical Survey, the rupture extended over 200 kilometres along a deep-sea trench, marking the most powerful earthquake in the region’s seismofocal zone since 1952.

Widespread impact and ongoing risk

The initial quake was followed by at least 30 aftershocks, ranging in intensity from magnitude 2 to 5. Experts warn that powerful aftershocks, potentially reaching magnitude 7.5, could continue for at least a month.

In Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the tremor caused the partial collapse of a nursery façade and left cracks in the walls of several medical and social service buildings. Several people were injured, although no fatalities have been reported so far.

Severo-Kurilsk, located on the island of Paramushir, also suffered damage. Local authorities reported broken chimneys and ventilation systems in multiple buildings. Three tsunami waves struck the island’s coastline, flooding the port and affecting operations at a fish processing facility.

Tsunami warnings across the region

A tsunami warning was issued across Russia’s Kuril Islands shortly after the quake, and waves measuring up to four metres were recorded in Kamchatka’s Yelizovsky District.

Japan issued alerts for parts of its eastern coastline and called on residents in affected areas to evacuate. In the United States, a tsunami advisory was declared in Hawaii, while monitoring systems were activated in Alaska and along the Pacific coast.

Response measures underway

The Kamchatka regional government has reduced working hours for public institutions, closing offices at 13:00 local time. A regional emergency headquarters has been set up to coordinate the response, and prosecutors in neighbouring Sakhalin have launched a hotline for residents.

Emergency services remain on high alert as assessments of damage and risk continue throughout the region.

Meanwhile, US President Donald Trump has issued a statement in response to a powerful earthquake off Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula, urging people across the Pacific region to remain vigilant amid tsunami alerts.
