Powerful earthquake rocks Hokkaido Island in northern Japan
A magnitude 6.2 earthquake struck parts of northern Japan early Monday, April 27, though authorities reported no damage or casualties.
The Japan Meteorological Agency confirmed that no tsunami warning or advisory was issued following the tremor, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
According to the US Geological Survey, the inland quake occurred 18 kilometres (11 miles) west of Sarabetsu, a small town on the northern island of Hokkaido, at a depth of 81 kilometres (50 miles). The agency recorded the quake’s magnitude at 6.1.
The seismic activity comes just a week after a stronger 7.7 magnitude offshore earthquake led Japanese authorities to issue a precautionary advisory about an elevated risk of a potential megaquake affecting northeastern coastal regions.
However, the JMA stated that the April 27 quake fell outside the area covered by the megaquake advisory and confirmed that the ongoing special awareness period is scheduled to conclude as planned.
