Prison population in Georgia increases by nearly a quarter
02 April 2026 12:12
The number of prisoners in Georgia rose by 22.6% in 2025, according to the annual report of the Public Defender (Ombudsman), Caliber.Az reports, citing Georgian media.
The report states that penitentiary facilities were at 90.4% capacity last year. In three prisons, the number of inmates exceeded the official limits.
The Ombudsman highlighted ongoing problems with sanitation, ventilation, natural lighting, and the minimum cell space. In some facilities, showers are allowed only twice a week, and the infrastructure remains largely inaccessible to people with disabilities.
