Protest wave sweeps all 50 states in US as “50501” movement gains steam
On April 19, thousands of Americans took to the streets across all 50 states in a coordinated protest campaign called “50501” — representing “50 protests, 50 states, 1 movement.”
The demonstrations were timed to coincide with the 250th anniversary of the American Revolutionary War, drawing on themes of freedom, resistance, and democratic values, Caliber.Az reports per foreign media.
From outside the White House to downtown city centers and even Tesla showrooms, protesters voiced their frustration with a variety of policies under President Donald Trump.
A major flashpoint was the deportation of Kilmar Ábrego García, who activists say was wrongly removed from the US to El Salvador. “We’re here because we believe freedom is still worth fighting for,” said Gihad Elgendy, speaking from the protest in Washington. He added that Trump “could easily pressure El Salvador to bring him back.” Much of the ire also focused on the Department of Government Efficiency (Doge) — Trump’s initiative aimed at shrinking federal bureaucracy and cutting spending. Critics argue the program threatens essential public services.
The protests were largely peaceful, though not without tension. Representative Suhas Subramanyam posted video on X of a man with a Trump sign pushing through demonstrators to confront him. Protesters held signs reading “No Kings”, a direct nod to the revolutionary heritage being commemorated. In Boston, where reenactments marked the battles of Lexington and Concord, demonstrators echoed the sentiment. As the 2024 election approaches, movements like 50501 reflect growing public engagement — and dissatisfaction — in a politically charged America.
