Protesters attack US Embassy in Bogota, injuring police officers
On October 18, 2025, protesters in Bogota, Colombia, attacked the US embassy using bows and arrows, explosives, incendiary devices, and stones, according to Colombian police reports cited by foreign media.
Some of the participants were masked and threw Molotov cocktails and other explosive packages during the clashes outside the embassy building. Four police officers were injured in the incident.
Colombian President Gustavo Petro condemned the attack, emphasising the protection of the embassy:
"I ordered maximum caution with the U.S. Embassy in Bogota. It is bad enough that after reaching an agreement with the Congress of Peoples to lift the blockades, a more radical group attacked the police guarding the embassy—several young men were wounded by arrows. The embassy has been protected as I promised. Colombia is complying with international treaties."
Defence Minister Pedro Sanchez characterised the incident not as a “demonstration” but as an “attempted assassination”:
"The Colombian state does not and will not tolerate such attacks on law enforcement officers. Anyone who attacks a member of the military or a police officer, attacks a public institution, attacks the state. The perpetrators of these crimes will be caught," he stated.
Bogota Mayor Carlos Fernando Galan confirmed that he had instructed police to intervene near the US Embassy and promised to refer the case to international bodies, including the United Nations office.
