Putin, Erdoğan set to discuss Türkiye's mediation role in Ukraine conflict at Kazan talks

21 October 2024 11:20

Russian President Vladimir Putin and Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan are set to discuss Türkiye's potential mediation in the Ukrainian conflict and the Middle East situation during their upcoming meeting in Kazan.

Two leaders will also address their bilateral agenda, focusing on economic, trade, and energy cooperation, Caliber.Az reports, citing a high-ranking source within Türkiye's presidential administration.

On October 11, President Putin confirmed in a conversation with the Speaker of the Turkish Parliament, Numan Kurtulmuş, that he is looking forward to a bilateral meeting with Erdoğan in Kazan.

Notaby, the BRICS summit is set to begin in Kazan on October 22 and will run until October 24. For the first time, the summit will include the participation of new BRICS members, as the organisation expanded to include five additional countries in January 2024. World leaders, including Chinese President Xi Jinping, are expected to attend the event.

In early September, it was announced that Türkiye had formally applied for membership in BRICS. Sources from Bloomberg indicated that Türkiye's move towards joining the group occurred several months prior, after unsuccessful talks to become a member of the European Union, for which it has been a candidate since 1999.
