MP: Putin-Pashinyan talks on ex-Armenian president’s arrest unclear

17 September 2026 13:03

Armenian National Assembly MP Levon Kocharyan has said he has no information on whether the issue of arresting his father, former Armenian President Robert Kocharyan, was discussed during a meeting between Vladimir Putin and Nikol Pashinyan in Bishkek, Kyrgyzstan.

Speaking at a briefing, he stressed, however, that the very fact that such a statement was made before the meeting is, in itself, very significant, Caliber.Az reports, citing Armenian media.

“I have no information. However, such a statement was indeed made, and the very fact that such a statement was made before the meeting is, in itself, very significant,” Levon noted.

In late August, Robert Kocharyan was arrested and remanded in custody for two months in a criminal case involving the alleged embezzlement of state property.

Kocharyan is accused of illegally acquiring property in collusion with several associates. According to investigators, during his presidency, he allegedly used his official position to acquire a number of socially and economically significant properties at prices below their market value.

Recently, Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan said everything stolen by Robert Kocharyan will be recovered, even the shoes they obtained illegally.
