Putin updates Erdoğan on Trump meeting, discusses Ukraine, bilateral trade

20 August 2025 15:35

Russian President Vladimir Putin, in a phone call with his Turkish counterpart Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, shared his assessments of the recent Russia–U.S. summit in Anchorage, Alaska, the Kremlin press service reported.

The Kremlin noted that the leaders discussed the latest developments surrounding Ukraine, Caliber.Az writes via Russian media.

“The Russian side expressed satisfaction with Türkiye’s assistance in facilitating negotiations between representatives of Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul,” the Kremlin noted.

Putin and Erdoğan further addressed the development of bilateral trade and investment.
“Some current issues on the bilateral agenda were also raised, including further strengthening of trade and investment ties. An agreement was reached to maintain direct personal contacts,” the Kremlin statement said.

The call came shortly after the August 15 meeting between Putin and U.S. President Donald Trump at a military base in Alaska. The talks lasted about three hours, including a one-on-one discussion in the American leader’s limousine en route to the main venue, followed by a “three-on-three” format.

The Russian delegation included presidential aide Yuri Ushakov and Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, while the U.S. side was represented by Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff.

Following the talks, the parties agreed on exchanges not only of military personnel but also of civilians. Russia proposed to Ukraine the creation of three online working groups to address political, military, and humanitarian issues. Moscow also offered to transfer to Kyiv the bodies of another 3,000 Ukrainian servicemen and to reinstate short humanitarian pauses along the front line for the evacuation of the wounded and retrieval of the dead.
