Referee for 2022 World Cup Argentina-Netherlands match reacts to Messi's criticism
Antonio Mateu Lahoz, the head referee for Argentina's quarter-final match against the Netherlands in Qatar, has responded to criticism of his decisions during the game from captain Lionel Messi and other players in the Argentine team.
"I am pleased with the work we did together with my colleagues in this game. It's sad that such situations continue to arise, because football is more than a sport. Criticism of Messi? I am very upset by what he said, but we will continue to work," Gazeta.ru reports, citing Mundo Deportivo.
The regular time ended in a 2-2 draw. In the penalty shoot-out, the South American players were more accurate, 4-3.
The International Federation of Association Football (FIFA) had earlier decided to open a disciplinary case against the Argentine football federation over statements made by the South American players after the match against the Netherlands.
Goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez and Argentina captain Lionel Messi criticized the actions of chief referee Mateu Laos.
The goalkeeper described the referee as his worst to date, while Messi said the referee was not up to the status of the match.
