Russia backs US–Iran memorandum as step to de-escalate tensions

19 June 2026 16:24

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has said that the United States–Iran memorandum of understanding should help prevent further escalation in the Middle East.

Addressing a press conference, Lavrov noted that the Russian side expects the agreement between Washington and Tehran to contribute to avoiding a renewed outbreak of violence in the region, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

“We hope that the signed memorandum between Washington and Tehran will help prevent a resumption of violence,” he said.

“We share a common assessment regarding the situation in the Middle East, around the Islamic Republic of Iran,” Lavrov added.

Earlier this week, the United States and Iran signed a memorandum of understanding providing for the immediate cessation of hostilities on all fronts, including in Lebanon. The Israeli side did not take part in the negotiations on the agreement.

Separately, the Swiss Foreign Ministry press service stated that talks between the United States and Iran, which were scheduled to take place in the Swiss city of Bürgenstock, have been postponed and will not be held on June 19.
