Russia: Baku-Yerevan's hastily concluded peace treaty to lead to new conflicts

The attempt to hastily conclude a peace treaty between Azerbaijan and Armenia to the detriment of quality and proper preparation will turn into new conflicts in the future, Russian Foreign Ministry’s Fourth Department of CIS countries Director Denis Gonchar said.

"A hastily prepared, crude peace treaty will not bring sustainable peace to the region. On the contrary, it will lay the groundwork for new conflicts and tragedies in the future. Priority should be given not to speed, but to qualitative preparation of balanced and mutually acceptable solutions," the diplomat stressed said in an interview with TASS.

Thus, he drew attention to the fact that the West periodically make statements that Baku and Yerevan will be able to sign a peace treaty "in the coming weeks and months". According to Gonchar, Russia believes that the parties themselves should determine the terms of the signing.

"The task of the responsible mediators is not to force the negotiation process in favour of opportunistic considerations but to facilitate the achievement of strong long-term agreements. They should be based on the existing realities on the ground, first of all on the Russian-Armenian-Azerbaijani statements at the highest level and the mechanisms acting on their basis," the diplomat concluded.
