Russia contains Tuapse oil spill after drone strikes VIDEO

29 April 2026 08:59

The spill of oil products at the Tuapse Oil Refinery has been fully contained, Russian authorities confirmed on April 29, following a series of drone attacks that triggered a state of emergency in the area.

According to the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia, cited by ASTRA Telegram channel, emergency crews have succeeded in halting the spread of oil products, though full cleanup efforts are still ongoing. Minister Alexander Kurenkov said that current measures remain insufficient to completely eliminate the contamination.

Overnight, responders reinforced containment efforts by raising the height of earthen barriers at the refinery. Additional floating booms are expected to be deployed shortly to prevent oil from reaching the sea, while nine rows of booms have already been installed along the Tuapse River.

Authorities are scaling up their response. Forty divers are being dispatched to the site, bringing the total number of EMERCOM personnel involved to around 300. In parallel, regional emergency services report that more than 360 personnel and over 60 units of equipment are engaged in mitigation efforts across the affected area.

The incident follows a third drone strike on the refinery in recent weeks. On the night of April 28, the facility was targeted again—just days after a major fire broke out at its marine terminal. The repeated attacks prompted local authorities to declare a state of emergency.

The impact on the surrounding community has been significant. Residents from several streets, including Koshkina and Pushkina, were evacuated after burning oil products spread into residential areas. Water supply was temporarily suspended across more than 30 streets in the city.

Governor Veniamin Kondratyev and EMERCOM chief Kurenkov have both arrived in Tuapse to oversee the response. Officials stated that while there is no immediate threat to public safety, environmental risks remain under assessment.

President Vladimir Putin has been briefed on the situation. Authorities maintain that the situation is under control, though efforts to fully eliminate the spill and mitigate ecological damage are continuing.
