Russia detains man accused of planning arson attack on military office PHOTO

05 August 2026 12:08

Russia's Federal Security Service (FSB) said it has detained a 22-year-old man in the Kaluga region on suspicion of plotting to set fire to a military enlistment office, alleging he acted under instructions from Ukraine's Security Service (SBU).

The FSB released footage of the arrest, claiming the suspect had been recruited through the Telegram messaging platform and had maintained contact with a Ukrainian intelligence handler for about a year, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

According to the agency, the suspect told investigators that he had been promised payment in exchange for carrying out a series of tasks, including painting anti-government graffiti and later setting fire to the military enlistment office.

The FSB said the man had conducted reconnaissance of the target and prepared an incendiary mixture in advance of the alleged attack.

During a search of the suspect's residence, officers seized several containers filled with the flammable mixture, along with communication devices that authorities said contained correspondence with the alleged handler.
