Russia keeps door open for Iranian uranium storage despite conflict escalation

16 June 2025 15:31

The Kremlin Spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, has confirmed that Russia’s offer to accept Iranian uranium remains on the table, despite the recent escalation in hostilities complicating the situation surrounding Iran’s nuclear program.

Addressing the media at a briefing, Peskov reiterated Moscow’s willingness to explore peaceful solutions amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

When asked what measures Russia could propose to help de-escalate tensions, he emphasized that the proposal for Russia to store Iranian uranium “retains its relevance.”

However, Peskov acknowledged the challenges posed by the outbreak of hostilities, stating, “But, of course, with the outbreak of hostilities, the situation has become seriously complicated.”

Prior to the commencement of Israeli strikes against the Islamic Republic, Russia announced last week its readiness to remove highly enriched uranium from Iran and convert it into civilian reactor fuel as a potential measure to de-escalate the crisis.

US President Donald Trump expressed optimism on June 15 regarding a forthcoming peace and highlighted the possibility that Russian President Vladimir Putin could play a mediating role.

Peskov reiterated Russia’s willingness to mediate if necessary but emphasized that the underlying causes of the conflict must be addressed and resolved, warning that the military strikes were exacerbating the crisis to an alarming degree.

“Russia remains ready to do everything necessary to eliminate the root causes of this crisis,” Peskov said. “But the situation is escalating more than seriously, and, of course, this is not affecting the situation for the better.”

When asked about Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s recent remarks suggesting that regime change in Iran might result from Israel’s military actions, Peskov stated that the Kremlin had taken note of those comments.

“You know that we condemn those actions that have led to such a dangerous escalation of tension in the region,” Peskov said. “And secondly, we also note a significant consolidation of society in Iran against the background of the bombing that is currently being carried out by the Israeli side.”
