Russia launches drone strike on Ukraine's Sumy, damaging infrastructure
In the early hours of August 27, Russian forces carried out a large-scale drone attack on the city of Sumy, causing significant damage to key infrastructure, authorities reported.
According to Ukrainian media, the information was confirmed by Oleg Grigorov, head of the Sumy Regional Military Administration, and Artem Kobzar, acting mayor of the city. Emergency services were promptly deployed to address the aftermath of the strikes. Fortunately, no residential areas were directly hit.
As a result of the attacks, only buses are currently operational within the city. Authorities have indicated that further updates on the full restoration of public transport will be provided as repairs progress.
The drone strikes also disrupted the city’s water supply. All water facilities were de-energized and are now operating on emergency backup power. Officials warned that, due to the loss of power at the central heating plant’s booster pumps, the upper floors of high-rise buildings are currently without water. Normal water supply will resume once power is fully restored.
Hospitals and other healthcare facilities continue to receive electricity through backup generators. As of 7:00 a.m. local time, parts of Sumy remain without power, while engineers work to restore the city’s electricity network.
The attacks follow similar strikes on the night of August 26, when drones targeted warehouses and uninhabited buildings in Sumy, causing fires and damage to non-residential structures.
