Russia: Powerful earthquake strikes off Kamchatka coast

A powerful earthquake struck off the coast of Russia’s Kamchatka Peninsula on November 5, the Kamchatka branch of the Russian Federal Research Centre reported via Telegram.

The tremor was recorded at 11:28 a.m. local time with a magnitude of 6.4, which seismologists classify as a strong earthquake.

The epicentre was located in the Pacific Ocean, about 1,169 kilometres from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, at a depth of 56.5 kilometres, geophysics say.

Residents of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and the nearby city of Yelizovo felt the tremors with an intensity of up to 4 points on the local scale.

Authorities have not issued a tsunami warning for the region.
