Russia's FSB foils alleged Ukraine-linked terror plot in Perm Krai
Russian security forces have prevented a terrorist attack allegedly orchestrated by Ukrainian intelligence in Perm Krai.
The FSB announced the operation through its Public Relations Center, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.
Authorities reported that, with the support of the Russian National Guard, a resident of Chusovoy was detained on suspicion of planning an explosion on the Chusovoy railway bridge, part of the Sverdlovsk Railway.
According to the FSB, the suspect had previously fallen victim to a phone scam, transferring around 350,000 rubles to so-called “safe accounts.” Scammers posing as law enforcement and intelligence officials then persuaded him to participate in a “check of the anti-terror security” of the region’s transport infrastructure.
As a result, the man reportedly manufactured an improvised explosive device (IED). During a search of his residence, authorities seized approximately 10 kilograms of explosives, IED components, and a webcam intended to monitor the railway bridge.
The Investigative Department of the FSB in Perm Krai has opened a criminal case for the illegal circulation of explosives. Officials said they are gathering additional evidence that could lead to reclassification of the charges to preparation of a terrorist act and illegal manufacture of explosive devices.
If convicted, the suspect could face life imprisonment.
