Russia's Krona-E missile system clears trials, set for mass production next year

01 November 2025 16:05

The Russian defence manufacturer Kalashnikov plans to begin serial production of the Krona-E surface-to-air missile (SAM) system in 2026.

The system successfully completed its trial program this summer, according to CEO Alan Lushnikov, who spoke to Kommersant newspaper.

“The system is highly ready, and we are offering it to everyone,” Lushnikov said. He also noted that Kalashnikov is moving forward with the development of interceptor drones, reflecting current battlefield requirements.

The Krona SAM system was first introduced in March 2025. Lushnikov explained that the idea for this highly automated system emerged after analysing counter-drone operations during the ongoing "special military operation" (SMO).

The Krona-E comes equipped with ten guided anti-aircraft missiles, including six Sosna-R missiles and four 9M333 missiles. The system can reach operational readiness in 10 minutes. Its engagement range extends up to 6 kilometres, with an altitude envelope from 0.03 to 3.5 kilometres.

The system is designed to protect strategically important facilities from a variety of aerial threats, including medium-class drones.

Alongside this, Russian forces have begun using the new heavy drone “Vogan”, capable of carrying up to nine kilograms of payload. The Vogan can be deployed both for munition delivery and as a loitering kamikaze drone.
