Russia's Rosatom eyes Turkish partnership for Paks II nuclear plant construction

12 May 2026 17:24

Russia’s state nuclear corporation Rosatom plans to involve Turkish specialists with experience from the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant in the development of the Paks II Nuclear Power Plant project in Hungary.

The announcement was made by Rosatom Director General Alexey Likhachev during remarks to journalists, Caliber.Az reports, citing Russian media.

Likhachev said the company intends to invite Turkish partners who participated in the construction of the Akkuyu nuclear power plant, highlighting their experience in large-scale nuclear infrastructure projects.

The Paks nuclear power plant is currently Hungary’s only operating nuclear power station and consists of four power units. Since February 2026, Rosatom has been engaged in the construction of two additional units as part of the Paks II expansion project.

According to the company, installation of the concrete foundation slab for the fifth unit of the plant is expected to be completed by the end of the year.
