Russia warns EU membership could restrict Armenia’s sovereignty
Russia has commented on Armenia’s plans to join the European Union, with Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova highlighting potential sovereignty constraints for the country.
Zakharova said that EU membership “inevitably involves significant limitations on sovereignty, and this is stated explicitly.”
She added that candidate countries are expected to relinquish some control over key areas, including foreign policy decisions.
“They even require candidates, even at an early stage, to adopt the EU’s positions rather than their own, for example, applying sanctions against those designated as adversaries by the European Union,” Zakharova said.
The spokeswoman also noted that joining the EU entails ceding authority in areas such as law, monetary policy, migration, and other sectors.
