Russia warns of "NATO embryos" emerging in Asia-Pacific
Russia has raised concerns over what it describes as the emergence of “NATO embryos” in the Asia-Pacific region, which Moscow says pose additional security threats.
Sergey Shoigu, Secretary of the Russian Security Council, said that such formations are beginning to emerge in the East, gradually evolving in ways that could heighten regional tensions and pose new risks to Russia, Zvezda News reported on Telegram.
Shoigu’s comments follow earlier remarks by Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov, who accused NATO of seeking a foothold in the Pacific to contain China and isolate Russia.
Lavrov said the alliance’s actions are undermining decades of regional security arrangements built around the central role of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
