Russian FM: US grip on global economy slipping

09 February 2026 12:24

Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has claimed that the United States is steadily losing its economic influence in the global economy, while countries in the Global South are becoming more prominent on the international stage.

Speaking in an interview with TV BRICS on February 9, Lavrov said Washington’s role in the world economy is diminishing as emerging powers continue to strengthen their positions.

“The United States is objectively losing its economic influence and weight in the global economy,” Lavrov said. He added that countries such as China, India and Brazil are rising in importance, while African nations are increasingly seeking to retain and develop their natural resources domestically rather than exporting them in raw form.

Lavrov also noted what he described as growing industrial ambitions across Africa, claiming that efforts to support such development began during the Soviet era.

The Russian Foreign Minister said these developments reflect broader changes in global power structures, which he described as a shift toward a multipolar world.

He argued that the current international system is no longer defined by the Cold War-era bipolar structure between the Soviet Union and the United States, nor by the unipolar order that emerged following the collapse of the Soviet Union. Instead, Lavrov said, multiple centres of influence are now shaping global development.
