Russian lieutenant-general critically wounded in Moscow assassination attempt PHOTO / Updated

Residents of a Moscow apartment building have described scenes of bloodshed following an assassination attempt on Lieutenant-General Vladimir Alekseev of the Russian Ministry of Defence.

Eyewitnesses told Baza that the attack took place on the stairwell of a residential building on Volokolamskoye Highway as Alekseev was leaving his apartment on the 24th floor. Neighbours reported hearing gunshots and cries for help before seeing Alekseev himself, wounded and partially conscious. One resident shouted for someone to call an ambulance.

“The entire floor was covered in blood, even the lift lobby,” a witness said.

Alekseev was shot three times during the incident and is currently in a critical condition.

Moscow authorities say an assassination attempt on Russian Ministry of Defence Lieutenant-General Vladimir Alekseev has been prevented.

The general was reportedly shot several times in the back by an unknown assailant in a residential building on February 6 and has been hospitalised, Caliber.Az reports via Russian media.

The Investigative Committee of Russia (SK) has opened a criminal case under charges of attempted murder and illegal possession of firearms. Police are currently searching for the attacker.
