Russian MFA publishes statement on prevention of nuclear war
Moscow strictly and consistently respects the postulate on the inadmissibility of nuclear war in it’s implementation of nuclear deterrence policies, the Russian Foreign Ministry announced on November 2.
The Diplomatic Service recalled, that Russia, being a permanent member of the United Nations Security Council and a nuclear power, has a special responsibility in matters of strengthening international security and strategic stability in accordance with the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons.
The ministry’s statement on the prevention of nuclear war was published on it’s website, claiming that Russia’s nuclear deterrence policy is strictly and consistently guided by the postulate that a nuclear war cannot be won and should never be unleashed.
It further stresses, that a "Russian response using nuclear weapons is hypothetically allowed only in response to aggression carried out with the use of WMD [weapons of mass destruction], or aggression using conventional weapons, when the very existence of the state is threatened".
"We fully reaffirm our commitment to the joint statement by the leaders of the five nuclear-weapon States on the prevention of nuclear war and the prevention of an arms race of 3 January 2022. We firmly believe that in the current difficult and turbulent situation, As a result of irresponsible and reckless actions aimed at undermining our national security, the first priority is to prevent any military clash between the nuclear powers", the statement reads.
In addition, the statement says that Russia calls on other countries of the "nuclear five" to demonstrate their readiness to work on this priority task and to abandon dangerous attempts to infringe on each other’s vital interests and balance on the brink of direct armed conflict and encouraging WMD provocations, which can lead to catastrophic consequences.
