Russian professor arrested on treason charges in Moscow
A professor at Russia’s Plekhanov Russian University of Economics has been remanded in custody on charges of high treason, according to a statement published on the official website of the Lefortovo District Court in Moscow.
Vadim Saltykovsky, 60, was detained in late July and is being held in a pre-trial detention centre until at least September 25, Caliber.Az reports per Russian media.
He has been formally charged under Article 275 of the Russian Criminal Code, which relates to state treason.
The case against Professor Saltykovsky is classified, and details of the accusations have not been made public.
Saltykovsky, who taught global economics at Plekhanov University, was first reported to have been arrested on July 29 by the Telegram channel.
Following the launch of the criminal investigation, his profile page on the university’s website was taken down.
The Russian authorities have not commented further on the nature of the alleged offence.
