Saab secures $48 million contract to enhance US air defence in Europe VIDEO
Saab has secured a $48 million contract from BAE Systems to supply Giraffe 4A radar systems to the United States Air Forces in Europe, enhancing surveillance and defence for American bases across the continent.
The advanced radar systems, scheduled for delivery starting in 2027, are set to modernize the US Air Force’s expeditionary combat airfield operations, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.
The agreement, valued at approximately 525 million Swedish kronor, marks a significant step in enhancing sensing and air defence capabilities overseas.
“Giraffe 4A is a multi-function radar offering a range of surveillance capabilities to support comprehensive air defence,” said Erik Smith, President and CEO of Saab in the United States. “This system will strengthen sensing capabilities and address a critical need overseas.”
The Giraffe 4A, introduced in 2021, is a state-of-the-art radar combining air defence and weapon-locating functionalities within a single platform. Equipped with active electronically scanned array technology and mounted on a high mast, the system is designed to overcome physical obstacles such as trees and tall buildings that can obstruct traditional radar systems.
Offering 360-degree coverage and a range of up to 300 kilometres, the radar is capable of tracking hundreds of aerial targets simultaneously, including drones, missiles, and high-speed aircraft. Available in both mobile and stationary configurations, it can also be operated remotely.
A naval variant, the Sea Giraffe 4A, is available for maritime applications, further demonstrating the system's versatility.
This development underscores the commitment to ensuring robust air defence capabilities for US forces stationed in Europe, addressing evolving security challenges in the region.
