Scholz reaffirms support for Ukraine in Kyiv, rules out Taurus missiles

04 December 2024 21:10

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, while highlighting Germany as Ukraine's second-largest arms provider after the US, has steadfastly declined to supply Taurus cruise missiles, citing concerns that such a move might entangle Germany in a direct confrontation with Russia.

During a rare December 2 visit, Scholz announced new military aid for Ukraine, signalling Berlin's unwavering support for Kyiv against Russia, Caliber.Az reports via foreign media.

The visit, his first to Kyiv since the early months of Russia's 2022 invasion, comes ahead of Donald Trump's return to the White House and weeks after Scholz's governing coalition in Berlin collapsed, threatening his future as chancellor.

In a statement on X, Scholz underscored his commitment to Ukraine: "My message from Kyiv to Putin: we're in this for the long haul. Our support for Ukraine will not waver. We will stand by the Ukrainian people – for as long as it takes."

The visit comes at a critical time as Russian forces accelerate their advance in eastern Ukraine and fears grow about a potential reduction in US aid under a future Donald Trump administration.

During his trip, Scholz announced a new €650 million package of military aid for Ukraine, set to be delivered this month. The support will include IRIS-T air defence systems, Leopard 1 tanks, and armed drones, according to Germany's defence ministry.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, in his nightly address, praised the robust discussions he held with Scholz, which lasted over two and a half hours.

"We agreed at the meeting with the chancellor that Germany will be with Ukraine in the future exactly as it should be, regardless of what happens in global politics and whatever changes in mood there may be," Zelenskyy said.

The two leaders also toured an undisclosed facility showcasing drones co-produced by Ukrainian and German firms. Additionally, they visited a hospital where they spoke to injured soldiers and medical personnel.

Scholz's visit signals Germany's intent to maintain strong support for Ukraine, even as Europe’s largest economy navigates its own political uncertainties.
