Senator Warner doubts US capacity to exert full pressure on Iran
US Senator Mark Warner, a Democrat, expressed scepticism over Washington’s ability to apply comprehensive pressure on Iran.
In an interview with CBS News, Warner suggested that the United States does not have the means to exert full pressure on Iran, Caliber.Az reports.
“A few weeks back, when the Iranian people bravely were in the streets, and there might have been a moment we couldn't strike because the aircraft carrier that was usually in the Mediterranean was off the coast of Venezuela during the blockade there,” Warner said.
The senator added that European nations could have applied enormous pressure on Iran, but were preoccupied with issues in Greenland and “saving NATO.”
At the end of January, US President Donald Trump announced that the US Navy had deployed a large task force to the Middle East, led by the aircraft carrier Abraham Lincoln. He warned Tehran of possible use of force if Iranian authorities refused to reach an agreement.
Details of a potential deal with the Islamic Republic were not disclosed by Trump.
Meanwhile, US officials have stated that they presented Iran with three demands: the complete cessation of uranium enrichment and disposal of existing stockpiles, limiting the number of ballistic missiles, and ending all support for proxy groups in the Middle East.
