Shootout in Russia's Makhachkala: Two gunmen killed, seven injured in attack on traffic police Updated

Two assailants who attacked a traffic police patrol in the city of Makhachkala, Dagestan, were shot dead by Interior Ministry officers, according to a statement published on the official Telegram channel of the Health Ministry.

The initial statement had confirmed the death of one assailant, with further information on the others clarified later in the day, Caliber.Az reports.

The number of those injured in the shootout has risen to seven. Emergency services are working to treat the wounded following the incident, which occurred at the intersection of Magomedtagirov and Kerimov Streets in the capital.

Among the injured are two police officers. One officer died at the scene, while two others — one in critical condition — were taken to the hospital by emergency crews. Two of the injured attackers, who were severely wounded, were also hospitalised.

Later, the Dagestan Health Ministry confirmed that one of the victims admitted to the hospital after the attack had died.

"Seven individuals were taken to the hospital; one has since died," a spokesperson said.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.

A deadly shootout unfolded in Makhachkala on May 5, resulting in the deaths of three police officers, according to the Ministry of Internal Affairs (MIA) of the Republic of Dagestan.

Sergey Melikov, the head of Dagestan, shared details of the incident on his Telegram channel, stating that the officers were fatally shot while attempting to stop a vehicle, Caliber.Az reports.

Thus, the officers were fatally shot during an attempt to stop a vehicle.

"Preliminary information suggests that MIA officers tried to stop a car, but the driver refused to comply and opened fire. There are also reports of injuries. Law enforcement agencies are currently working at the scene," Melikov said.

RT further reported that several individuals were injured, including a young girl, all of whom were taken to the hospital.

One of the attackers was killed during the assault, while others fled the scene in a stolen police vehicle. A citywide "Intercept" plan has been activated to track the suspects.

Investigations are underway to determine the full circumstances.
