Speaker: Brussels must wake up from “world of illusions” over Georgia

09 September 2026 10:55

Georgian Parliament Speaker Shalva Papuashvili has sharply responded to a statement by an EU representative at the 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, saying Brussels’ policy toward Georgia has reached a dead end.

Earlier, the EU representative said the bloc condemned arbitrary detentions and increasing repression in Georgia, including the detention of opposition leaders.

“Brussels is like a soldier who did not realise that the war was over and is still planning military operations. It is time for Brussels to leave the world of illusions. If EU representatives want to normalise relations with Georgia, they must stop their aggressive rhetoric toward Georgia and return to the basic principles of diplomacy: respect for facts, Georgia’s sovereignty, and the democratic choice of the Georgian people,” Papuashvili wrote on his Facebook page.

The 63rd session of the UN Human Rights Council is being held in Geneva from September 7 to October 7.
