Spokesperson: West exploits EU mission to expand influence in Armenia
The West is attempting to transform Armenia into a strategic outpost, according to Maria Zakharova, the official spokesperson for Russia’s Foreign Ministry.
Speaking at a briefing, Zakharova claimed that the European Union does not conceal its intention to use its new civilian mission in Armenia to interfere in the country’s internal affairs, including influencing the outcome of parliamentary elections scheduled for June.
According to Russian state news agency, Zakharova noted that this would be the EU’s second such mission in Armenia.
She argued that, under the pretext of monitoring illicit financial flows and countering cyber threats, the bloc would seek to expand its involvement in domestic political processes.
Zakharova also warned that Armenia should not expect tangible assistance from the EU, reiterating Moscow’s position that Western engagement in the region is driven by geopolitical interests rather than genuine support.
